[News] Latest Financial Reports of the Global Seven Foundries – How Will the Next Stage Develop?

Recently, the seven major foundries —TSMC, GlobalFoundries, UMC, SMIC, Hua Hong Semiconductor, VIS, and PSMC—have successively released their third-quarter financial reports and held performance briefings to explain the semiconductor industry’s business climate and the outlook for the next stage.

Overall, in the third quarter, both the revenue and net profit of the seven foundries showed a YoY decline compared to the same period last year. From the perspective of capacity utilization and foundry pricing, except for TSMC benefiting from advanced processes, seeing a rebound in capacity utilization and stable pricing, the other six all experienced declines in both data.

Recent news on foundry pricing and capacity utilization has been continuous. This article will take a closer look at the data of the above seven major foundries and the latest market dynamics to glimpse into the fourth quarter of this year and the trends in foundry services next year.

How did the seven foundries perform in Q3, and what about their capacity utilization?

TSMC

In the third quarter, TSMC’s consolidated revenue was TWD 546.73 billion, approximately USD 1.731 billion, a YoY decrease of 10.8% but a QoQ increase of 13.7%. The net profit for the third quarter was TWD 211 billion, approximately  USD 6.677 billion, a YoY decrease of 25.0%, but a QoQ increase of 16.0%. TSMC expects fourth-quarter sales to be USD 18.8~19.6 billion, with a gross profit margin of 51.5% to 53.5%.

In the first and second quarters of this year, it was said that TSMC’s 7nm capacity utilization rate had dropped to below 50%. However, in the second half of the year, benefiting from Apple expanding its new product lineup and companies like Nvidia and Qualcomm entering the 3nm era in the second half of 2024, the industry estimates that TSMC’s 7/6nm capacity utilization will hold at around 70% by the end of this year, and 5/4nm will be close to 80%, with a monthly production capacity of about 60,000~70,000 wafers by the end of this year.

GlobalFoundries

GlobalFoundries’ Q3 revenue decreased by 11% to $1.85 billion, and the net profit was USD 249 million, lower than the USD 337 million in the same period last year. GlobalFoundries CEO Thomas Caulfield stated in the financial report, “although the global economic and geopolitical landscape remains uncertain, we are collaborating closely with our customers to support their efforts to reduce inventory levels.”

UMC

UMC’s consolidated revenue for Q3 was USD 1.77 billion, a 1.37% increase compared to the second quarter but a 24.3% decrease compared to the third quarter of 2022. The gross profit margin for the third quarter was 35.9%, and the net profit was USD 495 million.

UMC’s utilization showed a significant decline during the second and third quarters, with its capacity utilization dropping from 71% in the second quarter to 67% in the third quarter, according to the company.

Looking ahead, UMC Chairman Jason Wang stated that short-term demand in the computer and communication sectors is gradually picking up in the fourth quarter, and the automotive market remains challenging. Customers continue to manage inventory levels cautiously, and the expected utilization in the fourth quarter is about 61% to 63%, with a QoQ decrease of about 5%, average selling prices remaining stable, and a gross profit margin of about 31% to 33%.

SMIC

SMIC’s Q3 revenue was USD 1.62 billion, a YoY decrease of 15.0% but a QoQ increase of 3.9%. Net profit attributable to shareholders of the parent company was CNY 678 million (approximately USD 95 million), a YoY decrease of 78.41% and a QoQ decrease of 51.81%.

In terms of production capacity, SMIC’s Q3 capacity was approximately 795,750 8-inch equivalent wafers (an increase of 41,500 8-inch equivalent wafers compared to the second quarter’s 754,250 wafers), with a capacity utilization rate of 77.1%.

Looking to the fourth quarter, SMIC expects sales revenue to increase by 1% to 3% QoQ, and the gross profit margin will continue to bear the pressure from new capacity depreciation, expected to be between 16% and 18%.

Hua Hong Semiconductor

Hua Hong’s Q3 revenue was s USD 568.5 million, a YoY decrease of 5.13% and a QoQ decrease of 8.08%. Net profit attributable to parent company was USD 95.83 million, a YoY decrease of 86.36% and a QoQ decrease of 82.40%.

Looking ahead to the fourth quarter of 2023, Hua Hong expects sales revenue to be between USD 450~500 million, with a gross profit margin of about 2% to 5%.

In terms of production capacity, as of the end of the third quarter, Hua Hong Semiconductor’s equivalent 8-inch wafer monthly production capacity increased to 358,000 wafers, with an overall capacity utilization rate of 86.8%.

VIS (Vanguard International Semiconductor)

In the third quarter, VIS’s consolidated revenue was TWD 10.557 billion, approximately USD 334 million, an increase of 7.1% QoQ.

VIS’s outlook is relatively conservative. The company expects the semiconductor supply chain to cautiously control inventory in the fourth quarter. Although the adjustment of consumer electronics inventory is nearing completion, adjustments in the automotive and industrial sectors are later. The company expects a significant adjustment in the fourth quarter, with an estimated QoQ decrease of 8% to 10% in wafer shipments, a QoQ decrease in capacity utilization in the mid-single digits, between 55% and 60%. The average selling price (ASP) of products is estimated to decrease by 2% or less per quarter, and the gross profit margin will continue to decline to between 22% and 24%.

In recent information revealed by the supply chain regarding foundry pricing, VIS might experience a pricing decline of up to 5% in the second half of the year. Big clients may even have the opportunity to negotiate a discount of up to 10%. This trend is expected to continue into the first quarter of next year, with a further reduction, possibly moving from single-digit to double-digit percentages.

PSMC

Q3 financial reports from PSMC show that, impacted by the decline in both capacity utilization and selling prices, the third-quarter main business recorded an expanded loss of TWD 1.408 billion (approximately USD 44.59 million)) and the after-tax net profit turned into a net loss of TWD 334 million(approximately USD 10 million).

PSMC General Manager Brian Shieh revealed that the market conditions in the third quarter still faced headwinds. To maintain competitiveness, PSMC has reduced prices to customers by about 4% to 5%.

It is reported that PSMC’s third-quarter capacity utilization is around 60%, and the gross profit margin is also impacted by idle capacity losses, dropping to 9.2%.

Regarding future demand, Shieh stated that the supply chain has now descended to a reasonable level, with market demand appearing in areas such as mobile driver ICs and surveillance camera CIS components. Visibility is expected to extend to around one quarter, so he is optimistic that PSMC’s fourth-quarter operations will grow by around mid-single digits.

The overall market sentiment is gradually clearing in anticipation of inventory corrections.

In general, as the fourth quarter is coming to an end, most companies still hold conservative views. In the consumer electronics field, such as PCs and smartphones, inventory adjustments have gradually reached the end, and some have already enjoyed the benefits of an upturn. However, inventory adjustments for automotive electronics and industrial applications are expected to lag, and this downturn is expected to be extended.

Among them, the views of TSMC and SMIC are worth noting. TSMC stated that customer inventory digestion will continue into the fourth quarter. Regarding the automotive and industrial platforms and AI businesses that TSMC has recently actively sought to expand, TSMC President C.C. Wei warned that the demand for AI is “not enough to offset” the weakening demand for chips in consumer electronic products on its earnings call in October.

Haijun Zhao, co-CEO of SMIC, stated that in the fields of smartphone and industrial control, Chinese customers have basically reached a balanced inventory level. However, European and American customers are still at historically high levels. Secondly, the relevant inventory of automotive products has begun to be on the high side, causing customers to be alert to market corrections, and orders are quickly tightening. Additionally, there are signs of a recovery in the third quarter in the smartphone terminal market, and the industry. As a whole, he believes that there will be a rebound in overall consumer electronics next year.

Regarding whether the global semiconductor foundry industry is slowly recovering from a downturn, TrendForce pointed out that in 2023, terminal demand is gradually recovering, and AI and automotive demand are maintaining growth momentum. AI servers are expected to grow by more than 37% in the next three years, and electric vehicles with the support of autonomous driving will have a compound annual growth rate of 30% to 40% in the next three years. Smartphones are expected to end their downward trend in 2024, with a growth rate of 2.9%, and servers will have a growth rate of 2.3%, overall leading to an increase in demand for foundry.

On the other hand, 8-inch wafer capacity utilization rate of foundries will gradually rise in 2024. The 8-inch production line produces products such as MOSFET, IGBT, and PMIC will still focus on 12-inch wafers capacity expansion in the next few years. In addition to adopting solutions from existing chip suppliers, the trend of customized chips has also emerged, and high-speed computing applications have become the biggest driving force for advanced processes. TrendForce predicts that the global foundry industry will experience a slight increase in 2024, reaching a growth rate of 6.4%.

China’s Share in Mature Processes will Speed up to 33% in 2027 under the Pressure of Geopolitics

TrendForce reports that from 2023 to 2027, the global ratio of mature (>28nm) to advanced (<16nm) processes is projected to hover around 7:3. Propelled by policies and incentives promoting local production and domestic IC development, China’s mature process capacity is anticipated to grow from 29% this year to 33% by 2027. Leading the charge are giants like SMIC, HuaHong Group, and Nexchip, while Taiwan’s share is estimated to consolidate from 49% down to 42%.

Expansion predominantly targets specialty processes such as Driver ICs, CIS/ISPs, and Power Discretes, with second and third-tier Taiwanese manufacturers at the forefront

Within the Driver IC sector, the spotlight is on high voltage (HV) specialty processes. As companies aggressively pursue the 40/28nm HV process, UMC currently dominates, trailed by GlobalFoundries. Yet, SMIC’s 28HV and Nexchip’s 40HV are gearing up for mass production in 4Q23 and 1H24, respectively—narrowing their technological gap with other foundries. Notably, competitors with similar process capabilities and capacities, such as PSMC, and those without twelve-inch factories like Vanguard and DBHitek, are poised to face challenges head-on in the short term. This trend may also have long-term implications for UMC and GlobalFoundries.

In the realm of CIS/ISP, 3D CIS structure comprises a logic layer ISP and CIS pixel layer. The primary demarcation for mainstream processes is around 45/40nm range for the logic layer ISP, which continues to progress toward more advanced nodes. Meanwhile, the CIS pixel layer, along with FSI/BSI CIS, predominantly uses 65/55nm and above processes. Currently, TSMC, UMC, and Samsung are the frontrunners in this technology. Yet, Chinese players like SMIC and Nexchip are hot on their heels, swiftly closing the gap. Their ascent is further fueled by Chinese smartphone titans OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi. Additionally, domestic shifts prompted by governmental policies are positioning Chinese CIS companies like OmniVision, Galaxycore, and SmartSens to rally behind local production.

Power Discretes mainly encompass products like MOSFETs and IGBTs. Vanguard and HHGrace have been deeply involved in Power Discrete processes for some time, boasting a more comprehensive process platform and vehicle certification than many competitors. However, a wave of Chinese contenders, backed by national policies favoring EVs and solar initiatives, are ready to stake their claim, intensifying global competition in this sector. This includes mainstream foundries like HHGrace, SMIC, Nexchip, and CanSemi. Additionally, smaller Chinese IDMs and foundries, such as GTA and CRMicro, are also entering the competitive landscape. If China massively ramps up its production capacity, it will intensify global competition in Power Discrete manufacturing. The impact will not only spark price wars among local Chinese businesses but could also erode the order books and clientele of Taiwanese companies.

In a nutshell, while China actively courts both global and domestic IC designers to bolster its local manufacturing presence, the ensuing massive expansion could flood the global market with mature processes, potentially igniting a price war. TrendForce notes that as China’s mature process capacities continue to emerge, the localization trends for Driver IC, CIS/ISP, and Power Discretes will become more pronounced. Second and third-tier foundries with similar process platforms and capacities might face risks of client attrition and pricing pressures. Taiwan’s industry leaders, renowned for their specialty processes—UMC, PSMC, Vanguard to name a few—will find themselves in the eye of the storm. The battle ahead will hinge on technological prowess and efficient production yields.

8-Inch Production Capacity UTR Drop to 50-60% in 2H23, the Cool Demand will Last to 1Q24

TrendForce research indicates that in 1H23, the utilization rate of 8-inch production capacity primarily benefited from sporadic inventory restocking orders for Driver ICs in the second quarter. Additionally, wafer foundries initiated pricing strategies to encourage clients into early orders, offering solid backup. However, in 2H23, persistent macroeconomic and inventory challenges led to the evaporation of an anticipated demand surge.

Meanwhile, stockpiles in automotive and industrial control segments grew after meeting initial shortages, tempering demand. Under fierce price competition from PMIC leader Texas Instruments (TI), inventory reductions for Fabless and other IDMs were drastically inhibited. With IDMs ushering in output from their new plants and pulling back outsourced orders, this compounded reductions to wafer foundries. This dynamic saw 8-inch production capacity utilization dipping to 50–60% in the second half of the year. Both Tier 1 and Tier 2/3 8-inch wafer foundries saw a more lackluster capacity utilization performance compared to the first half of the year.

Heading into 2024, with the prevailing economic turbulence, the overall semiconductor foundry capacity utilization rate will face challenges in recovery. The 8-inch capacity utilization for 1Q24 is poised to mirror—or potentially dip below—4Q23 figures, revealing a glaring lack of recovery indicators.

However, starting from 2Q24, TrendForce posits that while clarity on end sales remains murky due to overarching economic risks, inventory levels are expected to wane, returning to a healthier equilibrium. The ensuing periodic restocking and the added momentum from orders shifted to Taiwanese foundries (owing to decoupling from China), should keep the 8-inch utilization rate from diving further. The average annual utilization rate for 8-inch wafers in 2024 is pegged around 60–70%. A swift return to yesteryear’s peak capacity seems difficult for now.

Taiwanese and Korean semiconductor foundries face the brunt of order curtailments

A closer look reveals Chinese foundries, such as SMIC and HuaHong Group (primarily HHGrace for 8-inch), exhibiting marginally superior 8-inch utilization rates than their Taiwanese and Korean peers. The proactive pricing approaches of Chinese foundries and China’s push for domestic IC substitution and production are key drivers. However, despite price reduction across foundries in 2H23, a predominantly conservative market outlook from clients, combined with the absence of urgent orders, meant these reductions rendered limited assistance to the 8-inch wafer utilization rate in the latter half of the year.

Panning to 2024, SMIC and HHGrace are forecast to outpace their Taiwanese and Korean counterparts in an 8-inch utilization rate resurgence. HHGrance could even see a stellar rebound, reaching 80–90%. On the Taiwanese front, TSMC grapples with PMIC order pullbacks, predicting an expected drop in 8-inch utilization to below 60% from 4Q23 to 1Q24. UMC and PSMC, in the same span, are gearing up to maintain levels above 50%.

Furthermore, even traditionally resilient Japanese and European IDMs commenced their inventory recalibration in 3Q23, potentially further stalling the recovery timeline for the 8-inch capacity utilization rate. TrendForce insights suggest that, with mounting inventory pressures, Infineon is curtailing orders to external foundries such as UMC and Vanguard. This strategy will likely suppress Vanguard’s 8-inch utilization rate into 1Q24, casting a gloomier shadow than earlier projections.

Korean heavyweight, Samsung, has prioritized its 8-inch production for large-sized Driver ICs, CIS, and smartphone PMICs. However, the persistent softness in consumer demand has prompted their clientele toward a more guarded-order strategy. Furthermore, Chinese CIS patrons, aligning with local manufacturing inclinations, are transitioning toward native foundries. Consequently, Samsung’s 8-inch utilization rate has languished in 2H23, with expectations set at approximately 50% throughout 2024.

[News] SMIC Places Two Years’ Worth of Orders with Taiwanese Supply Chain, Urges Swift Delivery

According to Taiwan’s Economic Daily, after disassembling Huawei’s Mate 60 Pro smartphone, it has been revealed that the chips, including the Kirin 9000S, are produced by China’s semiconductor foundry, SMIC, using their advanced 7-nanometer process. This development has brought attention to SMIC’s manufacturing capabilities. Recently, it has been reported that SMIC has placed a substantial order with Taiwanese suppliers in the supply chain, equivalent to approximately two years’ worth of demand, and is urging swift delivery.

While SMIC has established itself in mature semiconductor manufacturing processes and serves not only domestic IC design companies but also many Taiwanese IC design firms, it has been actively trying to catch up with foreign giants in advanced manufacturing processes. Additionally, limitations in acquiring equipment like EUV have constrained its progress, making its achievements in the 7-nanometer process a noteworthy accomplishment.

In light of these developments, it has been reported that SMIC has approached Taiwanese partner companies to secure a substantial supply of specific products for an estimated two-year period, likely to be used in their advanced 7-nanometer manufacturing process. SMIC is hoping for proactive cooperation from its supply chain partners to ensure prompt delivery.

[News] Huawei’s Ambition: Regardless of the Disparity, China’s Chips Must Be Utilized

According to the news from Taiwan media, CNA, Huawei has broken through the U.S. blockade and launched a 5G smartphone equipped with domestically produced Chinese chips, sparking discussions. Huawei stated that although Chinese-made chips lag behind foreign counterparts, if they are not used, staying behind will always be a setback. If widely adopted, it could drive technological progress and catch up gradually.

According to reports from Chinese media Yicai, representatives from Huawei made these remarks during a speech at the “2023 World Computing Conference” on the 15th.

Huawei mentioned that the computing industry includes PCs, servers, operating systems, databases, as well as processors, memory modules, SSDs, HDDs, network cards, RAID cards, SSD controllers, network chipsets, and RAID card chipsets that constitute PCs and servers, which are the most critical problems to solve.

“We couldn’t even make LOM and RAID cards before, and we couldn’t even create a PMIC for a server. So, we need to return to the basics of the computing industry.”

Huawei believes that China needs to develop its own processors, operating systems, and databases. If all of these are sourced from external suppliers, there is a risk of information breaches through backdoors and vulnerabilities in PCs and servers. It could also be exploited as a means of attacking other servers and PCs.

“If our opponent is at an expert level, even though we have domestically produced products, we are still at a basic level, making it relatively easy to attack and steal information”. Huawei emphasizes that domestic production does not necessarily equate to security; only by enhancing capabilities can genuine security be achieved.

“There are currently more than 600 Chinese enterprises listed on the U.S. government’s entity list,” said Huawei’s representative, covering chips, hardware, software, algorithms, and applications. Additionally, export controls have impacted everything from design tools and materials to manufacturing equipment and chip products.

“In this situation, a practical problem we face in the long term is that China’s semiconductor manufacturing process will remain behind for quite a while. Huawei believes that this situation will persist for a considerable period because advanced processes are needed to produce more advanced chips. On the other hand, due to U.S. sanctions, obtaining advanced chips or computing systems presents challenges, if not impossibilities. Based on our years of experience and future judgment, this is a long-term situation. Don’t harbor any illusions about the future.”

“Although the chips, servers, and PCs we produce lag behind those produced abroad, if we don’t use them, the gap will always be there, and falling behind will always be the case. But if we use them on a large scale, it could drive progress in our entire technology and product development, gradually catching up”. According to Huawei, only through widespread use of domestic chips can push the entire computing industry to progress and develop.

Huawei recently quietly launched a high-end 5G smartphone equipped with the 7nm chip “Kirin 9000S,” manufactured by SMIC. While Chinese public opinion refers to it as a “breakthrough of the U.S. blockade” and a “strong return to 5G,” experts point out that its performance still lags behind the latest smartphone chips by two generations and question its manufacturing yield rate and output.
