Prices of Lithium Battery Cells to Go Up in Second Half of 2017 Due to Seasonal Demand, TrendForce Reports

10 July 2017

The global market for lithium batteries witnessed an average price increase of 15% to 25% for battery cells in the first half of 2017 compared with the second half of 2016, according to EnergyTrend, a division of TrendForce. This rise was mainly attributed to the cobalt price hitting a five-year high. Going into the second half of 2017, the price upswing in the cobalt market is expected to start leveling off. On the other hand, seasonal demand during the same period will drive market for batteries used in x-electric vehicles (or xEV, which include plug-in hybrid electric and battery electric vehicles). EnergyTrend projects that battery cell prices on average will increase by about 10% this third quarter compared with the previous quarter and will continue to be on a gradual uptrend through the fourth quarter.

Accident at LGD’s Gen-8.5 Fab in South Korea Will Tighten Supply for Large-Size LCD Panels This Third Quarter, TrendForce Reports

27 June 2017

LG Display (LGD) suffered a serious disruption to its production of large-size LCD panels on June 24, when a deadly accident occurred at its P8-1 panel fab in Paju, South Korea. The Gen-8.5 has been shut down for repair and investigation by the local authorities. WitsView, a division of TrendForce, states that this incident will have a major impact on the supply of large-size panels in the third quarter. While panel quotes have softened during the second quarter, the third quarter will see a return of seasonal demand from device vendors. The accident at P8-1 will contribute to a tightening of the supply and help prop up prices to some extent.

Chinese ODMs Have Rapidly Risen to Prominence as Competition for Panel Supply Becomes Critical, TrendForce Reports

27 June 2017

This year's top four LCD TV ODMs by their target shipments in order will be TCL, TPV, Foxconn and BOE Vision-Electronic Technology (BOEVT), according to the preliminary estimation by WitsView, a division of TrendForce. The fourth-place BOEVT in particular has emerged as a major pure ODM by taking advantage of the vast panel supply provided by its group company BOE Technology (BOE). Furthermore, BOEVT will be taking on U.S.-based VIZIO as its client for the first time in the second half of this year. The collaboration between the two companies indicates that Chinese ODMs are starting to play a bigger role in the global TV supply chain.

20 June 2017

Computer monitors and notebooks featuring HDR (high dynamic range) have been a highlight in this year’s major consumer electronics tradeshows from CES to Computex. According to WitsView, a division of TrendForce, HDR as a feature is now spreading into the PC market following its widespread adoption in the TV market last year.
