Today’s Sessions mainly Focused on LED Lighting and Applications

Philips Lumileds Lighting Company: The Success and Challenge in LED Lighting Component Industry

After the speech by Philips Lighting on the first day, Sean Zhou, Regional Marketing Director of Philips Lumileds Lighting Company, shared the successful experience of Philips Lumileds and his opinion on the challenges the LED indoor lighting sector is facing.

At first, Mr. Zhou concisely analyzed the LED market from different sectors such as hotel lighting, office lighting and LED replacement light, and then he pointed out the key element in indoor lighting and explained the LED bin code and thermal dissipation issue from a professional perspective. In the indoor lighting part of his speech, he analyzed the light quality, efficiency and cost. As for the solution to bin code issue, he dissected the issue by providing a deliberate explanation of the definition, advantage and the final goal of his method.

He believed, as far as indoor lighting is concerned, even though the LED penetration rate in the office lighting sector seems limited at the moment, it also shows great promise: lighting applications account for 30 to 50% of the total orders from commercial buildings. In the future, the new office buildings will put more accent on lighting in order to meet the energy-saving requirement, which will in turn increase the popularity of T-LEDs.

Everlight Electronics: The Trend of Solid-State Lighting End-Market Applications

Ilkan Cokgor, the Vice President of Global Marketing of Everlight Electronics, has over 20 years of research, product development, marketing and sales experience in the fields of optoelectronics, LEDs and solid state lighting.

He announced statistics and diagrams of LED price/performance ratio and LED energy-saving performance. He believed that LED energy-saving technology can help reduce energy consumption and increase profits. To prove his point, he also provided statistics of energy consumption and profit increase.

Mr. Cokgor, who holds a Ph.D. in Optelectronics from the King’s College, University of London, gave a presentation addressing the trend of solid-state lighting end-market applications, in which he compared the LEDs which adopt more reliable flip-chip packages with LEDs that adopt regular packages.

Henkel AG & Co.: Innovations in Assembly Solutions for LED Lighting

Kent Lu, the LED Sales Manager of Henkel AG & Co., addressed Henkel’s innovations in assembly solutions for LED lighting. He introduced not only the construction, the global capacity, partners, breakthroughs, quality and efficiency of Henkel, but also Henkel’s solutions in the LED lighting supply chain.

The solutions include materials of LED chip packages, conductive materials, thermal dissipation products such as heat conductive adhesive, thermal pad, phase change material which are crucial to LED lighting products, encapsulation and protection of LED driver and light bar, and low-pressure and low-temperature molding technology and products.

Henkel’s technology in the LED sector is an integration of that of Ablestik, Emerson & Cuming, Hysol and Loctite, which is proficient to provide the market with total solutions of LED package and lighting product assembly.

Miniwiz: Innovative LED Application in Green Building

Arthur Huang, the Founder and Managing Director of Miniwiz, addressed the innovative applications in green buildings and the future trend in his presentation.

Mr. Huang, focusing on rechargeable products and building solutions, has participated in a number of foreign and domestic green building projects and won many product design awards. One of his works is the FE EcoARK Fashion Hall of the Taipei International Flora Exposition. He boldly incorporated the modern technology into the building design and used 1.5 million plastic bottles as materials. The Hall not only is earthquake-proof, typhoon-proof and eco-friendly but also fully demonstrates the innovation of green building.

In addition, Mr. Huang analyzed the challenges LED manufacturers are facing in the green building sector. He pointed out that because LED is pointolite, the cost of turning it into linear light or flat light is still high. As far as the development of green buildings is concerned, how to reduce the cost will become the key bottleneck to overcome. He also analyzed the innovations of green buildings, the environmental awareness and eco-friendly buildings by showing three videos.

Miniwiz, specializing in designing and developing green energy products and marketing low-carbon products and appealing solutions with a pursuit of convenience, fashion, delicacy and practicality, has launched products such as HYmini Wind Powered Charger and miniSOLAR panel and appurtenances which can be attached to bicycles and arms.

The professional engineers and architects of Miniwiz are planning to cooperate with the students of Harvard Design School and Harvard Business School in the next three years.

ELB Electronics: Lighting Control Solutions for Commercial Building Applications

Steven J. Purdy, the Product Research and Development Director of ELB Electronics and in charge of the development of ELB products, plans to establish ELB into the forerunner in the dimming ballast and lighting control market of North America.

His speech covered LED applications in RF wireless lighting control. Mr. Purdy believed that due to the fact that lighting control systems can reduce energy consumption by 50% and bring positive effects to the environment, they will become more and more popularized in intellectualized buildings.

Moreover, Purdy introduced a number of RF technologies. RF wireless control does not require cable network. Users are able to control lighting equipment through the tiny portable remote control to achieve excellent compatibility with the lighting system. Moreover, he will explain the effects brought by the wireless lighting control system with a chart of the energy consumption by the commercial buildings in the U.S. and present a lighting control strategy.

Synopsys: Successful Optical Design of LED Lighting and Backlight Systems

David Stuart, the Director of Sales of Synopsys, gave a presentation about the successful optical design of LED lighting and backlight systems with a 31-page PowerPoint file and two relevant cases.

With an example of a successful optical design of LED lighting and backlight systems by utilizing LightTools and SolidWorks, Mr. Stuart pointed out the key design strategy and explained the concrete method and LED resource model. In addition, his presentation also covered the design and optimization of SolidWorks.

Mr. Stuart stated that using LightTools, which is a powerful tool for designing, analyzing and optimizing LED applications, and SolidWorks for the applications of LED lighting and backlight systems have become the mainstream in the market.

The library of LightTools has many statistics which support different LED modules.

Jiangsu Canyang Optoelectronics Ltd.: Competing Internationally: LED Lighting Future Development from Experience

As the last speaker of LEDforum Shanghai 2011, Frank Chien, Ph.D., the President and CEO of Jiangsu Canyang Optoelectronics Ltd., addressed the future development of LED lighting from an international perspective.

Mr. Chien analyzed the current situation of the LED lighting industry and proposed a development strategy catering to the present trend. He indicated that the LED applications and penetration rate in household electrical appliances have proven fruitful, which results in a cost reduction of LED manufacturing.

Currently, IT products dominate the LED market, but the landscape is soon to change. In the next two years, TV will become the main source of demand in the LED market, and lighting applications will begin to take over afterward. Mr. Chien also stated that through technology integration, the only goal of Jiangsu Canyang is to provide lighting companies with light sources which possess high price/performance ratio, supreme reliability and meet lighting regulations.

LEDinside expected the MOCVD capacity of Jiangsu Canyang to reach 50 units, GaN LED epi wafer capacity to reach 1.44 million and LED chip capacity to hit 18 billion by the end of 2011. Jiangsu Canyang specializes in manufacturing high-brightness GaN LED epi wafers, LED chips and indoor and outdoor lighting products, whose wavelength range reaches 385nm to 560nm. Jiangsu Canyang, whose products are hugely acclaimed by manufacturers worldwide in terms of brightness, electric property and reliability, owns two plants and an office building which are 79,083.06 square meters in size.
