[News] DDR5 MRDIMMs Gain Momentum; Renesas Unveils 16,000 MT/s Chipset as AMD Reportedly Eyes Adoption
DDR5 MRDIMMs are gaining traction as rising compute demand drives memory makers to accelerate their product roadmaps. According to Wccftech, Renesas has unveiled a new MRDIMM chipset solution capable of enabling DDR5 MRDIMM speeds of up to 16,000 MT/s, up to 25% faster than the previous generation. The company adds that it has also begun sampling its latest MRDIMM MRCD (RRG5013x) and MDB devices to select customers, including all major DRAM suppliers, with production availability expected in the second half of 2027.
Among Renesas’ partners, AMD may be one of the key adopters of the company’s latest MRDIMM solution, as Wccftech indicates. The report notes that the company has already outlined DDR5-12800 MRDIMM support for its Zen 6 Venice and Verano platforms, and its future Florence “Zen 7” processors could support even faster MRDIMMs.
MRDIMM is a next-generation DDR5 server memory technology designed for AI and high-performance computing (HPC) workloads. By enabling simultaneous operation of two memory ranks, it significantly increases memory bandwidth while remaining compatible with existing DDR5 platforms, according to ZDNet, citing JEDEC.
The industry views MRDIMM as a key memory technology that will drive the server market before DDR6 reaches widespread adoption rather than as a replacement for DDR6, Weekly Post notes. Its ability to deliver DDR6-class bandwidth while remaining compatible with existing platforms is expected to accelerate adoption.
Commercial products are also beginning to emerge. According to Economic Daily News, Innodisk unveiled its DDR5-12800 MRDIMM memory modules, offering up to 60% higher bandwidth than DDR5-8000 RDIMMs while maintaining compatibility with existing DDR5 RDIMM slots.
The JEDEC roadmap outlines the next phase of MRDIMM development. According to ITHome, citing the JEDEC roadmap, the second-generation MRDIMM standard is nearing completion with support for speeds of up to 12,800 MT/s, while third-generation MRDIMMs are expected to reach up to 17,600 MT/s around 2030.
MRDIMMs Gain Momentum Across the AI Server Ecosystem
Major memory vendors are also expanding their MRDIMM portfolios. According to Wccftech, Micron has introduced MRDIMMs with speeds of up to 14,400 MT/s for AI server applications. On the platform side, Intel is among the first to support 8,800 MT/s MRDIMMs on its Xeon 6 processors, while AMD is targeting support for speeds of up to 12,800 MT/s.
