As next-gen memory tech like HBM, SOCAMM, and 3D NAND increasingly need stronger chip design and advanced packaging capabilities, SK hynix, according to The Elec, has launched an unusually large-scale recruitment of design engineers.

According to the report, the memory giant plans to hire a triple-digit number of design engineers through its rolling fresh graduate recruitment, with applications open until the 23rd.

The Elec also notes that SK hynix’s increasingly competitive compensation is raising concerns that not only new graduates but also early-career engineers could be drawn into the hiring pool, adding pressure on the broader chip design talent market.

Kim Kyung-ho, chairman of the Korea Fabless Industry Association, told The Elec that most firms cannot realistically match SK hynix’s pay levels, warning that if the hiring spree “sucks in” talent like a black hole, it could have a severe impact on Korea’s fabless semiconductor industry.

The Elec further reports that the hiring move is also being closely watched within Samsung Electronics. While the company’s memory division is expected to receive sizable performance-based bonuses, engineers in the System LSI and foundry divisions—both of which have underperformed—are unlikely to see comparable payouts, raising concerns over potential turnover among junior design talent, according to the report.

SK hynix Drops Degree Rule in AI Talent War

On the other hand, SK hynix has taken another aggressive hiring step. According to industry sources cited by Newdaily, the company removed the “four-year degree or higher” requirement from its rolling recruitment that began on the 17th. The company said in a press release that it will prioritize experience, skills, cultural fit, and growth potential over formal academic credentials.

Newdaily notes that while SK hynix frames the move as a shift toward skills-based hiring in the AI era, industry observers see it as a reflection of intensifying talent competition, driven by HBM rivalry and rising sensitivity over compensation.
