As per a report by The Elec, Samsung’s 8-inch gallium nitride (GaN) production line is now ready for operation.

Samsung Electronics previously announced in 2023 that its power semiconductor wafer fab would begin mass production in 2025, which is behind schedule in fact. The latest industry updates indicate that Samsung’s first 8-inch GaN production line is expected to enter mass production as early as the second quarter of 2026, with initial revenue projected to remain below KRW 100 billion.

The report notes that Samsung has established a comprehensive GaN solution ecosystem, covering everything except chip design, and is capable of independently producing GaN epitaxial wafers.

In addition, Samsung plans to commence operations of its silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductor foundry line within this year. The company possesses end-to-end capabilities in the SiC segment, including design, enabling it to complement GaN technologies across different voltage ranges.

Previous reports also revealed that Samsung has invested approximately KRW 100–200 billion in advanced process equipment, including MOCVD systems from Aixtron, to support the processing of both SiC and GaN wafers.
