[News] CXMT DDR5 Reportedly Tops 9,000 MT/s on AMD Platform, Narrowing Performance Gap With Global Leaders
China’s DRAM maker CXMT is advancing at a rapid pace. According to TechPowerUp, Colorful’s CXMT-based DDR5 memory has surpassed 9,000 MT/s on an AMD platform, highlighting improving overclocking potential. A 48GB (24GB×2) iGame Shadow II kit running on Colorful’s iGame X870E VULCAN W OC motherboard reached 4,507 MHz, equivalent to over 9,014 MT/s effective speed with DDR. The result marks a notable step up from late 2025, when CXMT announced DDR5 capable of reaching 8,000 MT/s.
CXMT is also making progress on memory latency. As the report indicates, Colorful is testing 48GB (24GB×2) iGame Shadow II kits on ASUS motherboards, targeting ultra-low latency comparable to products using DRAM from the top three memory makers. On the latest AMD and Intel platforms, Colorful has tested DDR5-6000 at CL30, with preliminary tests also reaching CL28.
Progress is also evident on the manufacturing side. According to Wccftech, citing MyDrivers, CXMT’s 17nm DDR5 chips have achieved a 90% yield. The chips are produced on a 17nm-class process, while other memory makers, such as Micron, manufacture DDR5 on more advanced 10nm-class processes and rely on extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography.
CXMT-based DDR5 is also gaining broader platform support. According to ITHome, GIGABYTE announced in July that its full lineup of DDR5 motherboards now supports memory modules using CXMT DRAM dies, with AMD 800- and 600-series boards supporting speeds of up to 8,200 MT/s for CXMT-based 16Gb and 24Gb DDR5.
According to TrendForce, CXMT ranked fourth among DRAM suppliers by revenue in 1Q26 with a 7.6% market share. Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron remained the top three suppliers, collectively accounting for 89.7% of the global market.
CXMT Expands Capacity as DRAM Tightness Strengthens Pricing
CXMT is also accelerating its manufacturing expansion. Reuters notes, citing sources, that the company is planning a second 12-inch DRAM fab in Beijing, alongside new projects in Shanghai and Hefei. CXMT is reportedly seeking at least RMB 60 million (US$8.9 million) in support from the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area, with other state-owned technology companies also interested in participating in the financing.
As noted by Dealsite, the ongoing DRAM shortage and price surge are creating a favorable environment for CXMT as Samsung Electronics and SK hynix prioritize server and HBM capacity, tightening conventional DRAM supply. With demand outpacing supply, CXMT has been able to absorb orders without significant price discounts. Industry sources indicate that its average DRAM selling prices are now only 5%–10% below those of Samsung and SK hynix, with CXMT products even trading above Samsung’s prices in some parts of the Chinese market.
CXMT is actively expanding its manufacturing footprint. Dealsite adds that monthly capacity is expected to rise from around 300,000 wafers currently to roughly 350,000 by year-end and further to about 500,000 by the end of 2028.
