[News] Samsung Display’s Pilot Line for Micro LED Smartwatch Displays Under Construction

As per South Korean media outlet ETNews on May 27, Samsung Display (SDC) is building a pilot production facility for Micro LED smartwatch displays on a 5.5-generation Quarter Cut production line at its A2 campus in Asan, Chungcheongnam-do.

An industry insider said the Micro LED process equipment includes transfer, bonding, inspection, and repair systems. Samsung Display had been evaluating equipment suppliers from late last year through early 2026, with the relevant tools expected to be installed within the year. After completing the pilot facility this year, the company is also considering mass-production investment in the second half of next year.

It’s reported that SDC launched its Micro LED smartwatch development project in 2023. Industry observers believe the company aims to accelerate commercialization by leveraging technologies accumulated during prior R&D efforts and conducting direct process verification at its own production facilities.

According to TrendForce, SDC showcased a 2.1-inch Micro LED smartwatch at CES 2025 and Display Week 2026, featuring a resolution of 418 × 540 and brightness of 4,000 nits. And the Micro LED chips were supplied by San’an Optoelectronics.

TrendForce further indicated that SDC has kicked-started the construction of a pilot production line for its Micro LED smartwatch prototype. To reduce power consumption, the device is expected to adopt high-voltage Micro LED chips, with potential suppliers including San’an and PlayNitride.

Samples of the Micro LED smartwatch will reportedly be provided to brand customers including Samsung Electronics and European and U.S. brands upon completion of R&D, while final production plans will depend on customers’ actual needs.

Meanwhile, AUO has already achieved commercialization of Micro LED smartwatch technology through shipments for the Garmin fēnix 8 Pro. The company is also expected to adopt high-voltage Micro LED chips to address power consumption challenges.

TrendForce also noted that Apple has not entirely abandoned the Micro LED smartwatch market and may revive related plans through a renewed supply-chain management strategy.
