Backed by the Japanese government, Rapidus is pushing toward 2nm mass production by 2027 as it seeks to close the gap with global foundry leaders. Despite this ambitious roadmap, the company’s financial position remains somewhat opaque, drawing market scrutiny.

Notably, according to financial disclosures shared via catr.jp, citing data from Kanpō (Japan’s Official Gazette), Rapidus reported net sales of JPY 147.4 billion in 2025, alongside a net loss of JPY 375 million.

The company’s cost of sales fully offset its revenue, reflecting its current business model centered on government-commissioned R&D. Meanwhile, Rapidus’ balance sheet expanded sharply, with total assets surging to JPY 749.5 billion in 2025 from JPY 429.8 billion in 2024.

The data suggest the increase was largely driven by a spike in current liabilities, likely tied to advance government funding or short-term financing, underscoring the capital-intensive ramp-up of its manufacturing and development efforts.

As reported by Yomiuri Shimbun, Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) on April 11 approved an additional JPY 631.5 billion in support for the company, lifting total government backing to around JPY 2.4 trillion.

Rapidus Accelerates Node Roadmap and Customer Traction

Against this backdrop, Rapidus continues to advance its development roadmap. Nikkei XTech reported in March that CTO Kazunari Ishimaru said the company is aiming to narrow its technology gap with TSMC to around six months at the 1nm node.

Meanwhile, another Nikkei XTech report indicates that Rapidus is set to begin producing customer-designed 2nm test chips by late 2026, while also planning to kick off development of its 1.4nm process the same year, with mass production targeted around 2029. According to Nikkei, Fujitsu is moving to develop a dedicated AI chip for servers and related systems, built on an advanced 1.4nm process, with manufacturing set to be outsourced to Rapidus.

According to an earlier MONOist report, Rapidus is currently in talks with over 60 companies, primarily across HPC, AI, and edge computing. Around 10 have already received preliminary pricing, as the company moves to roll out its process design kit (PDK) to accelerate customer chip development, as per the report.
