[News] Micron Taiwan Union Reportedly Seeks 15% Profit Share After New Reward Plan; Warns of Strike Vote

Days after Micron unveiled its biggest-ever reward package for more than 60,000 employees worldwide—including a NT$1 million cash bonus for each Taiwan employee—its labor dispute in Taiwan continues to escalate. According to SET iNEWS and Central News Agency, the union held a press conference on Sept. 15 demanding that 15% of operating profit be allocated to profit sharing.

The SET iNEWS report notes that rather than one-off bonuses, the union is demanding a long-term, transparent profit-sharing system. As highlighted by the report, the new bonus amounts to just 4.4% of Micron’s operating profit, well below other major memory makers.

The dispute could also escalate further. Radio Taiwan International reports that Micron’s Taiwan Union warned it could declare negotiations deadlocked and move to a strike vote if Micron fails to provide a concrete response at mediation sessions on Sept. 18 and 21. The union, per the report, said more than 80% of Micron employees across its Taoyuan and Taichung sites have joined, with membership continuing to grow.

Employee frustration also stretches back several years. TradingKey notes that the union pointed to Micron’s 2023 layoffs and bonus cuts as another source of discontent. In late 2022, the company announced plans to cut its global workforce by about 10% in 2023 and suspend bonuses for the year, the report adds.

The union is also highlighting the widening gap between Micron’s profits and employee rewards. Micron’s GAAP net income surged from $778 million in FY2024 to $8.54 billion in FY2025, while rank-and-file employees in Taiwan received bonuses worth about 2.37 months of pay, according to TradingKey.

As noted by TechNews, Micron said last Thursday that it will distribute FY26 rewards to more than 60,000 employees worldwide, with the package includes a NT$1 million cash appreciation bonus for each Taiwanese employee who joined by August 29, 2025. For Taiwan employees, the package reportedly translates into 35 to 68 months of total compensation for production-line workers.

However, according to RTI, the union disputed Micron’s claim that rewards could reach “up to 68 months of pay,” saying the figure is based on lower-paid workers earning just over NT$30,000 a month and bundles annual salary, the NT$1 million bonus and RSUs—potentially overstating what employees actually receive.
