[News] ZJ Innolight Debuts on HKEX in Record IPO as InP Substrate Bottleneck Intensifies
Zhongji Innolight, a global leader in optical transceivers, officially listed on the Main Board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) on July 30, 2026. The company priced its H-share offering at HKD 980 per share, securing base gross proceeds of HKD 53.410 billion (with net proceeds reaching approximately HKD 54.513 billion).
If the 15% over-allotment option is exercised in full, total fundraising will expand to HKD 61.422 billion. This marks the largest IPO on the HKEX in 2026 to date, as well as the largest Hong Kong listing event since Alibaba Group’s secondary listing in 2019, setting a new high for the past seven years.
The H-share offering attracted 33 top-tier cornerstone investors—including Temasek, Blackstone, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), Hillhouse Capital, Alibaba Group, and Tencent. Cornerstone investors collectively subscribed to approximately 49.12% of the global offering.
Capital Allocation Strategy
- Global Capacity Expansion (~30% / approx. HKD 16.35 billion): Adding an estimated annual capacity of 50 million high-end optical modules over the next three years to meet global cloud vendors’ volume delivery demands for 1.6T and higher-spec products.
- Next-Generation R&D (~30%): Sustaining active R&D in 1.6T, 2.4T, and 3.2T optical modules, alongside high-speed optical interconnect technologies leveraging Co-Packaged Optics (CPO) and Near-Packaged Optics (NPO) architectures.
- Strategic M&A & Industry Investment (~15%): Pursuing vertical integration across critical upstream segments, including optical chips, components, and raw materials.
- Supply Chain Resilience & Working Capital (~25%): Securing strategic inventory reserves and bolstering supply security for core materials, such as III-V semiconductor substrates and laser chips.
As 1.6T optical transceivers transition into full-scale mass production and verification, physical expansion constraints in module assembly have shifted upstream to front-end foundational materials. Indium Phosphide (InP) substrate materials—essential for high-end laser chips—are experiencing an unprecedented supply-demand squeeze. In response, global capacity expansions and localized supply chain developments are accelerating rapidly.
Global Giants Scale Up
- Coherent: Launched a 6-inch InP wafer expansion project in Texas, USA, in June 2026. Once fully operational, capacity will quadruple, with production already backed by a USD 2 billion long-term agreement with NVIDIA.
- AXT: Planning to double its InP production capacity by the end of 2027 to address persistent global deficits.
Chinese Supply Chain Breakthroughs
Localized industrialization in China is accelerating to address supply vulnerabilities:
- Yunnan Germanium: Officially initiated a high-quality InP single-crystal wafer project with a total investment of CNY 189 million in April 2026. The expansion targets an additional annual capacity of 300,000 InP wafers, bringing the company’s total annual output to 450,000 wafers, primarily serving mid-to-low-end transceivers and standard telecom components.
- Vital Materials/ Guangdong Xianrui: Officially launched a 40-ton annual capacity InP crystal production project on July 21, 2026, completing its Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) public disclosure.
- Tianjin Kuanjing Semiconductor: Signed an agreement for a 6-inch InP single-crystal industrialization project on June 24, 2026, completing facility delivery in July. The facility specializes in large-diameter, highly uniform 6-inch InP single-crystal substrates engineered for high-speed optical chips and advanced communication devices.
