According to its press release, Micron plans to expand its U.S. investments to approximately $150 billion in domestic memory manufacturing and $50 billion in R&D, creating an estimated 90,000 direct and indirect jobs. As part of today’s announcement, the company will invest an additional $30 billion beyond its previous plans. This includes constructing a second leading-edge memory fab in Boise, Idaho; expanding and upgrading its existing manufacturing facility in Manassas, Virginia; and establishing advanced packaging capabilities in the U.S. to support long-term growth in HBM.

These investments are expected to help Micron maintain market share and support its goal of producing 40% of its DRAM in the U.S., as highlighted in its press release.

Micron’s broader $200 billion U.S. expansion plan includes two leading-edge high-volume fabs in Idaho, up to four in New York, and the expansion of its existing facility in Virginia.

The company has already reached key construction milestones on its first Idaho fab, with DRAM production slated to begin in 2027. A second Idaho fab will further increase Micron’s U.S. DRAM output to meet rising demand fueled by AI and is expected to come online ahead of the first New York fab.

Micron has finalized a $275 million direct funding award under the CHIPS Act to support the expansion and modernization of its Manassas, Virginia facility, with work set to begin this year. Notably, the investment will bring Micron’s 1-alpha DRAM node production onshore.

Despite Micron’s sweeping $200 billion U.S. expansion plan, challenges remain. Following its announcement of a $100 billion mega fab project in 2022 and the receipt of $6.1 billion in CHIPS Act funding in 2024, progress on its highly anticipated chip plant in Clay, New York, has stalled. According to The Daily Orange, citing Syracuse.com, groundbreaking has now been pushed back to late November or December 2025—well behind the original target of June 2024. In today’s press release, Micron states that it expects to begin ground preparation in New York later this year.

GlobalFoundries Pledges $16B to Expand U.S. Chip Production

In addition to Micron, GlobalFoundries also announced new U.S. investments on June 4. According to Economic Daily News, citing Bloomberg, the company plans to invest $16 billion to boost domestic semiconductor manufacturing. Of that total, $13 billion will go toward expanding its existing facilities in New York and Vermont, while $3 billion will support U.S.-based research efforts focused on advanced technologies.
