[News] Samsung Secures Patent for Rollable Display Phone with Movable Camera
According to the Chinese media outlet IT Home, citing My Smart Price, Samsung has been granted a new patent that describes a unique display design equipped with a movable camera.
The patent number is D1066344. As noted in the report, the patent showcases a rollable smartphone equipped with a single-camera system. The camera moves along with the rolling screen, allowing it to switch between front-facing (selfie) and rear-facing (scene) photography, enabling dual functionality.
Another report from SamMobile indicates that Samsung’s patented design is reminiscent of the Galaxy A80, which featured a single-camera system that popped up and rotated to function as a selfie camera. However, as noted in the report, the Galaxy A80 was not a major commercial success and never received a successor.
The SamMobile report also suggests that Samsung’s patented design may never materialize into an actual product, as it would require significant R&D efforts and technical expertise to implement successfully. Developing an ultra-flexible camera system would be a major challenge. Moreover, cost constraints could further hinder Samsung from bringing this design to market.
According to TrendForce, in Q4 2024, Samsung dropped to second place in the global smartphone production ranking, producing 52.4 million smartphones, down 10.6% QoQ. Its decline in market share reflected the completion of flagship model restocking and increased competition from Chinese brands in key markets like India and Africa. Samsung’s total production 2024 fell 2.1% YoY to 224.3 million units.
