Key Highlights
- In 1Q26, the global EV market exhibited diverging regional trends, characterized by stronger momentum in Western markets relative to the East. Growth in the Chinese market decelerated due to mounting cost pressures and delayed policy rollouts. Conversely, Western Europe, Japan, and South Korea emerged as primary growth engines, buoyed by robust government policy support.
- The booming demand for AI has caused a fab capacity crunch, causing memory chip contract prices to surge exponentially. Compounded by simultaneous price hikes across other semiconductor components and upstream raw materials, this has severely squeezed the already razor-thin margins of Chinese automakers, forcing select automotive brands to adjust retail prices upward.
- Hyper-competition and diminishing returns in China’s domestic market are compelling major automakers to pivot their strategic focus toward overseas expansion. Consequently, their powertrain strategies are diversifying from a strictly BEV focus to a multi-powertrain approach that incorporates various hybrid architectures.
- MediaTek plans to migrate a portion of its IVI SoCs to SiP technology. By adopting a business model of selling modularized products, MediaTek is expected to streamline customer-side design workflows while driving up revenue growth.
- Assuming AI-related demand remains strong, automotive memory prices are projected to maintain an upward trajectory throughout 2027 because of the persistent supply-demand imbalance. However, as contract prices approach a high plateau, the momentum of these price hikes is expected to moderate. Looking further ahead to 2028, pricing trajectories will hinge on the sustained strength of AI-related demand and memory suppliers’ capacity expansion progress.
