[News] Huawei Reportedly Plans 4Q26 Korea Launch of Ascend AI Chips and Atlas 950 SuperPod as NVIDIA Alternative
Huawei is reportedly preparing to launch its AI chips in South Korea. According to ETNews, sources say Huawei Korea is preparing to roll out the Ascend AI accelerator lineup—including the Ascend 950DT and 950PR—as well as the Ascend-powered Atlas 950 SuperPod AI computing system in South Korea in the fourth quarter.
The report says Huawei may position its products as a lower-cost alternative to NVIDIA while pursuing localization efforts, including tailored pricing, marketing strategies, and a possible South Korea-specific brand name.
The Ascend series is Huawei’s in-house neural processing unit (NPU) lineup for AI computing. According to the report, Huawei launched the Ascend 910C last year before entering mass production of the next-generation Ascend 950PR in April 2026. The company is also said to be planning a fourth-quarter launch of the Ascend 950DT, a model optimized for AI training.
To support its South Korea expansion, Huawei has reportedly selected two local distributors, including existing partner SK Shieldus. ETNews says the companies were chosen for their Huawei product distribution experience and technical capabilities, which are expected to facilitate the company’s entry into the local NPU market.
Beyond standalone chips, Huawei also plans to offer the Atlas 950 SuperPod. The report says Huawei Korea will position the system as a cost-competitive alternative to NVIDIA, claiming the Ascend 950PR delivers roughly 2.87× the inference performance of the H20 at about one-quarter the cost. While the 950PR trails NVIDIA’s flagship H200, Huawei argues the Atlas 950 can help narrow the performance gap by scaling thousands of interconnected Ascend chips.
The latest reported move also aligns with Huawei Korea’s previously stated plans. According to a late-2025 Yonhap News report, Huawei Korea CEO Valian Wang said the company planned to launch AI computing cards and AI data center solutions in 2026, aiming to provide Korean companies with an alternative to NVIDIA.
Adoption Outlook and Potential Challenges
Notably, the ETNews report says the Ascend 950PR has already been adopted by several major tech companies, including for DeepSeek V4 deployments. Huawei is also said to have improved compatibility with NVIDIA’s CUDA ecosystem through its own networking technologies, addressing a key barrier to broader adoption. Building on this momentum, the company is looking to expand into South Korea’s fast-growing AI infrastructure market.
That said, the report notes that Huawei may still face challenges gaining traction in South Korea, with industry observers pointing to local sensitivity toward Chinese technologies and products, as well as concerns over higher power consumption due to heat generation.
