[News] Samsung Reportedly Plans Galaxy Z Fold 8 and “Wide Fold” to Expand Lineup; Potential Specs Emerge
Samsung is reportedly planning a new generation of foldable smartphones. According to ZDNet, citing Tom’s Guide, sources indicate that Samsung Electronics may unveil its next-generation foldables this summer, including the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and a tentatively named Galaxy Z Wide Fold. The following outlines the key differences between the two devices based on currently available information.
Regarding release timing and pricing, the report suggests the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is likely to debut between July and August this year. Pricing is expected to start at around $1,999 (approximately KRW 3 million), broadly in line with its predecessor, though rising component costs and tariff pressures could drive a potential increase. The Galaxy Z Wide Fold may be introduced alongside the Z Fold 8 or on a separate timeline, with its starting price also expected to be around $1,999.
Design, Display, and Camera Differences
The two models are expected to diverge clearly in design. According to the report, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is likely to retain a form factor similar to its predecessor. It is expected to feature an approximately 8-inch foldable display when unfolded, a 6.5-inch cover screen, a 120Hz refresh rate, and an AMOLED panel. Notably, Samsung may introduce a laser-drilled metal plate technology to reduce visible screen creasing.
In contrast, the Galaxy Z Wide Fold is expected to adopt a wider aspect ratio. It may feature a 7.6-inch internal display and a 5.4-inch outer screen, resulting in a shorter but wider form factor. The report notes this approach aligns with the potential direction of a future foldable iPhone.
The Galaxy Z Wide Fold’s main display aspect ratio is drawing particular attention. According to Kbench, citing SamMobile, the device is highly likely to adopt a 4:3 aspect ratio for its main screen. This format, commonly used in tablets such as the iPad, is well suited for enhancing immersion in photo and video viewing as well as multitasking. The report interprets this as a strategy by Samsung to leverage these advantages to further improve large-screen usability.
In terms of cameras, the report indicates the Galaxy Z Fold 8 may receive modest upgrades, including a 200-megapixel main sensor and a possible increase in the ultra-wide lens from 12MP to 50MP. By contrast, the Galaxy Z Wide Fold is likely to adopt a dual-camera system instead of a triple-camera setup.
Chip Strategy: Snapdragon Leads, Exynos a Possibility
As for processors, the report suggests the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will likely be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite (5th generation) chipset. Given that both the Galaxy Z Fold SE and Galaxy Tri-Fold use Snapdragon chips, the Galaxy Z Wide Fold may follow suit. However, as Samsung expands its use of Exynos, the possibility of adopting the Exynos 2600 cannot be ruled out.
