Amid China’s push for semiconductor self-reliance, Huawei is gearing up to roll out a flurry of major updates in late November. Citing Shanghai Securities News, the South China Morning Post reports that the tech giant is set to unveil a new AI infrastructure technology on Friday (Nov. 21) that could lift GPU utilisation to around 70%, a significant jump from current levels.
Meanwhile, Huawei Central reports that the company will introduce its Mate 80 smartphone lineup on November 25 alongside its new flagship Kirin 9030 chipset, including a Pro variant.
Huawei’s AI Tech Aims to Rival NVIDIA
According to the South China Morning Post, the technology will allow unified management of computing resources across Huawei’s own chips, NVIDIA GPUs, and third-party accelerators. Notably, it is expected to raise the utilisation rate of AI chips—including GPUs and NPUs—to around 70%, up from today’s 30–40%, the report adds.
In comparison, the report explains that Huawei’s new system would mirror a solution from Run:ai, the software company that NVIDIA acquired in 2024 for US$700 million, known for orchestrating large-scale AI workloads across GPU clusters.
If it works as expected, the tech would fill another key gap in Huawei’s AI roadmap and reinforce its strategy of using software to bridge hardware shortcomings. The company has already introduced CloudMatrix 384, a large-scale computing architecture that clusters Ascend chips, and in September it laid out a development plan for the Ascend lineup, covering the upcoming 950PR/DT, 960, and 970 chips.
In August, the company rolled out UCM (Unified Computing Memory), which blends multiple cache-optimization algorithms to intelligently manage KV Cache data during AI workloads. According to Securities Times, UCM can automatically route cached data across HBM, DRAM, and SSD based on real-time memory heat patterns, further reducing China’s reliance on foreign memory chips.
Kirin 9030 to Debut with a Variant
Meanwhile, after launching the Mate XTs Extraordinary Master with the Kirin 9020 in September, Huawei is set to debut the Mate 80 series on November 25, featuring the Kirin 9030 in the Pro model and Kirin 9030 Pro in the Pro Max, according to Huawei Central, based on details from the retail boxes.
Huawei Central notes that although details on the Kirin 9030 remain scarce, it is notable that Huawei is equipping its smartphones with two flagship Kirin chips. The report suggests the 9030 will power the standard and Pro models, while the 9030 Pro is reserved for the Pro Max and Ultimate Design, ensuring top-tier performance.
As the Economic Daily News reported in September, the new Kirin 9030 will be revealed in Q4, likely built on a 5nm process.
