Samsung’s leadership transition is taking shape after Vice Chairman Chung Hyun-ho, long viewed as the company’s “second-in-command,” stepped back from frontline management, clearing the way for the next generation of leaders. According to Chosun Biz, a major point of focus is whether Roh Tae-moon, president and head of the Mobile eXperience (MX) Business, will be promoted to vice chairman in the year-end reshuffle, forming a “two-top vice chairman” structure with Jun Young-hyun, head of the Device Solutions (DS) division.

So far, no head of the MX Business has ever been promoted to vice chairman. But as the MX unit continues to deliver strong results and expand its influence within the company, there is reportedly increasing sentiment inside Samsung Electronics that the head of the MX Business should now be elevated to vice chairman. Currently, Roh also chairs the Quality Innovation Committee and has been serving as acting head of the Device eXperience (DX) division since April, the report notes.

The MX Business has been under pressure from both Apple and low-priced Chinese competitors, yet President Roh is widely credited with shaping the unit into what it is today. As the report notes, he is a smartphone development expert who steered the creation of the Galaxy lineup. Within the Wireless Business Division, he oversaw the development of major flagship models, including the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series. Roh also played a central role in establishing the AI ecosystem within Samsung’s smartphones, the report adds.

Major Leadership Shifts May Be Expected at Samsung

As noted by Newsis, Samsung Electronics is expected to carry out its regular executive reshuffle early next week. With Vice Chairman Chung Hyun-ho stepping away from frontline management and the Business Support Task Force being reorganized into a permanent division, this year’s reshuffle is anticipated to be broader in scope than in previous cycles.

The Newsis report indicates that notable changes are expected within the Device Solutions (DS) division, which oversees Samsung’s semiconductor operations. In the memory business, with intense competition in the HBM4 market projected to begin next year, the company may appoint a dedicated leader for the division.

Meanwhile, attention is also on Vice Chairman Jeon Young-hyun, who currently holds multiple key roles—CEO, head of the DS division, head of the Memory Business Division, and president of SAIT (formerly the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology). As Newsis highlights, there is growing interest in whether he will step back from some of these roles in the upcoming reshuffle.
