As it seeks to regain momentum beyond memory, Samsung Electronics is charting an ambitious path for its foundry division, aiming for a long-awaited turnaround. According to ETNews, citing industry sources, the company has set a target of making its foundry business profitable by 2027 and aims to capture a 20% market share by revenue within the same timeframe. The plan is said to be anchored by major contracts with Tesla and other big tech firms, along with planned production ramp-up at its Taylor fab in the U.S.

According to TrendForce, the company ranked second in 2Q25 with $3.16 billion in revenue, representing a 7.3% share, while TSMC maintained a commanding lead with $30.24 billion and a record 70.2% share.

The ETNews report notes that Samsung’s plan to achieve a turnaround in 2027 reflects new business opportunities and growing confidence in its technology. In 2025, the company secured foundry contracts from major North American tech firms, including Tesla and Apple. The report also highlights that orders for AI and high-performance computing (HPC) chips are rising, particularly at the 4nm, 5nm, and 8nm nodes where yields have stabilized, a clear improvement from past years when low yields constrained customer growth.

During its third-quarter earnings call, Samsung foundry announced that it had achieved record order volumes, driven by 2nm-class orders from major customers, while operating losses had “narrowed significantly.” The report adds that Samsung’s foundry losses dropped to below KRW 1 trillion in the third quarter of this year.

In addition, Samsung’s Austin fab in the U.S. is also running at higher utilization levels, helping boost profitability. The report notes that the facility focuses on mature nodes between 14nm and 65nm and has recently expanded its customer base to include Qualcomm.

Samsung Accelerates Taylor Fab Launch and Expansion

Meanwhile, the Taylor fab is scheduled to begin operations next year, with Samsung speeding up construction and equipment installation. The report highlights that setup work is expected to finish by the second quarter, paving the way for full-scale production to begin in the third quarter.

Samsung is stepping up efforts to bring its Taylor fab online. According to FNnews, citing industry sources on the 4th, ASML has begun assembling a dedicated EUV team to support operations at Samsung Electronics’ plant in Taylor, Texas, indicating that the Taylor plant is getting closer to entering the actual operation phase.

Notably, ETNews states that Samsung is planning a second production line (Phase 2) at the Taylor site, which will be much larger than the initial phase. To facilitate an early start, the company is in discussions with partners regarding investments and the supply of materials, components, and equipment.
