Following its June announcement to invest roughly $200 billion in U.S. manufacturing, Micron has taken a major step toward building its new New York plant. Syracuse.com reported that, for the first time, the memory giant has submitted a detailed site plan to the town of Clay for its proposed chipmaking complex.

The 336-page filing offers the most complete look yet at the massive campus, the report notes, adding that Micron is now in the final stages of obtaining the first three permits needed to begin land clearing this November. The planning board is set to review the application later this month, the report adds.

The report points out that supported by as much as $25 billion in taxpayer incentives, the project is expected to relocate about 40% of Micron’s chip production back to the U.S., reducing the company’s heavy reliance on Asian manufacturing facilities.

According to Syracuse.com, the site plan zeroes in on the first New York fab, outlining everything from the height of the main and auxiliary buildings to the landscaping and lighting design. Notably, the report suggests that each fab will occupy 28 acres, and Micron intends to invest up to $100 billion over the next two decades to construct four fabs in New York in sequence.

For more details, the report revealed that construction on the first fab is scheduled to begin in late 2025. According to Syracuse.com, each fab will feature 600,000 square feet of cleanroom space, 290,000 square feet for cleanroom support, and 250,000 square feet of administrative offices.

U.S. Production Timeline Revealed

During its June 25 earnings call, Micron revealed that its first Idaho fab, ID1, reached a major construction milestone in June. DRAM wafer production is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027, followed by customer qualifications. The company noted that its new Idaho facility, ID2, is expected to start production before the first New York fab.

On the other hand, ground preparation for the New York site is slated to begin later this year, pending completion of state and federal environmental reviews. According to Micron, the first fab in New York is expected to become operational in 2029, following the Idaho fabs’ ramp-up.
