According to TVBS, Taiwan-based display leader AUO Corporation has announced a bold strategic shift, signaling a strong push into Micro LED technology. The company emphasizes the technology’s increasing momentum in sectors such as televisions, consumer electronics, and automotive displays, noting its adoption by major players like Samsung and Sony Honda Mobility, the report highlights.

AUO CEO and President Frank Ko reveals that the company’s Micro LED business is already engaged in order discussions with clients in the TV, IT, and automotive sectors, according to Economic Daily News.

Economic Daily News notes that Sony Mobility’s order is a major focus of AUO’s 4.5-generation production line, with plans to feature AUO’s Micro LED display in a new vehicle set to debut in the U.S. market in the second half of 2026. Additionally, AUO has delivered a 114-inch Micro LED TV to Samsung, as the report points out.

The company points to the lower capital requirements of Micro LED technology. Citing Chairman and Group Chief Strategy Officer Paul SL Peng, TVBS notes that constructing a Micro LED production facility would cost around NTD 2 billion (approximately USD 66.7 million)—significantly less than the NTD 200 billion (about USD 6.67 billion) typically needed to build an OLED panel factory.

AUO executives also highlight Micro LED’s outstanding transparency—50% to 100% higher than competing technologies. This breakthrough opens up new applications in industries where traditional displays have fallen short, as TVBS indicates.

TrendForce emphasizes that the immediate priority for the Micro LED industry is to scale up the market quickly in order to realize economic efficiencies. As a result, non-display sectors have increasingly become important avenues for growth in addition to focusing on display applications.

These non-display opportunities span a wide range, including optical communication applications accelerated by AI, biotechnology-related medical uses, and industrial production areas such as 3D printing and photopolymerization, as TrendForce notes.

TrendForce forecasts that the chip market value for Micro LED display applications will reach USD 740 million by 2029, with a CAGR of 93% from 2024 to 2029.
