According to Commercial Times, citing Wccftech, Rose Castanares, president of TSMC Arizona, recently stated in an interview with Axios that TSMC’s total investment of USD 165 billion in the U.S. is expected to directly create 12,000 jobs once all sites are completed and fully operational.

As noted by Commercial Times, TSMC first announced its Arizona plant project in 2020, following incentives provided under the U.S. CHIPS Act. The company committed USD 65 billion to build three fabs in the state, with the first facility having already started volume production in the first half of this year. Castanares stated that this investment alone is expected to directly create 6,000 jobs in the U.S., the report adds.

In March, TSMC announced an additional USD 100 billion investment in the U.S. to build three more fabs, two packaging facilities, and an R&D center in Arizona. Castanares said this phase will add another 6,000 jobs, bringing the total to 12,000 direct positions across both investment phases, as the report highlights. She emphasized that the 12,000 figure refers to direct employment once all six fabs and related facilities in Arizona are fully operational.

Meanwhile, TSMC has stated that the additional USD 100 billion expansion announced in March will create 40,000 construction jobs over the next four years, as noted in the report.

Regarding the construction timeline, during its earnings call, TSMC Chairman C.C. Wei said the second fab in Arizona has wrapped up construction after the first went into volume production in the fourth quarter of 2024. He also suggested that the third and fourth fabs in Arizona are set to begin construction later this year.

Tech Giants Boost TSMC’s U.S. Fab Momentum

TSMC’s Arizona facilities are attracting major customers. According to Reuters, AMD’s flagship chips will soon be produced at the site—marking the first time the company’s products are manufactured in the U.S.

In addition, Wccftech notes that AMD is reportedly shifting its 4nm chip orders from Samsung Foundry to TSMC’s U.S. fabs, with the appeal of U.S. production likely playing a key role in the decision.

Meanwhile, Reuters also notes that NVIDIA plans to invest up to USD 500 billion in U.S.-based AI server production over the next four years. The company has confirmed that its next-generation Blackwell chips are now being produced at TSMC’s Phoenix plant.
