[News] Foldable iPhone Case Leak: Early Design Hints at Key Hardware Specs — Dual Cameras and Slim Profile
Amid growing market speculation that Apple’s foldable iPhone may be facing certain production bottlenecks, including potential hinge-related challenges, the long-anticipated device still appears to be on track for a 2026 debut. According to MacRumors, citing French media outlet iPhoneSoft, accessory maker iFunSmart has already begun listing cases designed for the upcoming handset.
As the reports note, accessory makers often ramp up production ahead of a new iPhone launch, relying on dummy units or leaked CAD files to calibrate mold dimensions. While still unconfirmed, these pre-production designs have historically tracked Apple’s final hardware with near millimeter-level accuracy, as suppliers cannot risk missing launch-day demand.
According to the reports, the listings reveal a slim profile, a minimalist dual-camera bump, and a circular MagSafe-style magnetic cutout. Notably, iFunSmart’s case features only two rear camera cutouts, reinforcing speculation that Apple may omit a dedicated telephoto lens, the reports suggest, adding that a Camera Control button opening is also visible, while an Action button cutout appears absent.
Key Specs & Design Leaks
MacRumors reports that Apple is now tipped to debut its first foldable iPhone alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup in late 2026. The device is also rumored to feature the cutting-edge A20 Pro processor, 12GB of RAM, and dual 48MP rear cameras, and is expected to be priced at around $2,000 at launch.
Industry leaks cited in the report suggest a 5.5-inch cover display paired with a 7.8-inch foldable inner screen, alongside an ultra-thin profile of around 4.5mm when unfolded and approximately 9.5mm in the folded state. As highlighted by iPhoneSoft, this would be leaner than the iPhone Air.
Meanwhile, Phone Arena notes that Apple’s foldable design may diverge from conventional book-style foldables such as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series. Instead, Apple is reportedly pursuing a wider, inward-folding form factor more closely aligned with Huawei’s Pura X lineup.
To accommodate internal space constraints, the report adds that Apple is expected to drop Face ID in favor of a side-mounted Touch ID sensor integrated into the power button.
Notably, TrendForce’s latest research on the display industry reveals that the foldable smartphone market is expected to see Apple enter as early as the second half of 2026. TrendForce estimates that Apple, leveraging its strong brand positioning and consumer anticipation, could capture nearly 20% market share in 2026, compressing the share of competitors such as Samsung Electronics and Huawei to around 30% each.
Key Bottlenecks in Focus
However, industry leaks suggest several potential hurdles ahead of mass production. Wccftech, citing Weibo tipster “Momentary Digital,” reports that the device is still in the testing phase. The leak adds that the crease-free display is expected to remain smooth over extended use, though it does not specify how many folding cycles are required before any visible crease may appear.
Notably, the report also highlights a faint “rattling” sound from the hinge during operation, which is said to fall short of Apple’s quality standards, pointing to a possible mechanical issue that could delay trial production.
In a separate report, Wccftech notes that Surface-Mount Technology (SMT) may present another challenge for Apple’s foldable iPhone. The process, as explained by the report, enables electronic components to be mounted directly onto a PCB surface, eliminating the need for traditional through-hole wire connections. Components are instead placed on designated pads, where solder paste is applied and later heat-cured to form both mechanical and electrical bonds.
According to the latest information cited, Apple could be facing difficulties in implementing SMT processes on the PCB of the so-called iPhone Ultra, the report adds.
