[News] Apple Foldable Supply Chain Takes Shape: Samsung, Foxconn, Chinese Suppliers in Focus

With several months still to go before Apple’s fall launch event, discussions around its first foldable iPhone are already heating up rapidly. Though Nikkei notes that Apple’s first foldable iPhone has encountered technical bottlenecks during engineering testing, raising delay risks, Bloomberg reports it remains on track for a September unveiling despite potential early supply constraints. According to ijiwei, against this backdrop, attention is increasingly shifting to the potential supply chain, given the product’s strategic importance to Apple.

Panel Strategy: Samsung Exclusive Supply and CoE Adoption

First, regarding the panel, as noted by ijiwei, sources say Apple has agreed to exclusively source foldable smartphone OLED panels from Samsung Display over the next three years. The panels will adopt color-on-encapsulation (CoE) technology, which forms a color filter layer above the encapsulation layer without a polarizer. As ijiwei indicates, polarizers can cause cracking at bending points in foldable designs, making CoE a standard approach for recent foldable panels. Notably, the OLED materials will continue to use the M14 set found in the iPhone 17 Pro Max rather than a new material stack, reflecting Apple’s focus on stability and cost efficiency.

Memory, Optics, and Assembly: Key Supply Chain Roles

As for memory, according to ijiwei, citing The Bell, sources say Apple has placed large-volume orders with Samsung for 12GB LPDDR5X chips as the primary configuration for the iPhone Fold, with procurement prices roughly doubling year over year. For optics, ijiwei reports that Largan is expected to supply camera lenses, while key hinge components will be provided by Taiwan-based Shin Zu Shing (SZS).

On the manufacturing side, the report adds that Foxconn is set to serve as the exclusive assembler, responsible for final assembly. It has already established dedicated production lines for new product introduction and engineering validation, with mass production planned for the fourth quarter of 2026.

China’s A-Share Suppliers in Apple Foldable Supply Chain

In addition, ijiwei highlights that several A-share listed companies in China are deeply involved in the supply chain for Apple’s foldable iPhone, with LY iTECH among them. Sources say the company has already supplied foldable device hardware to major clients, including support components and hinge modules made from stainless steel, titanium alloy, and carbon fiber.

In its 2025 annual report, LY iTECH disclosed mass production and shipments of ultra-thin titanium alloy foldable supports and PC carbon fiber supports, and announced a key breakthrough in a high-end vapor chamber cooling project with a major North American client, the report adds.

Lens Technology is also reportedly involved. As ijiwei indicates, the company stated it is supplying UTG glass, PET film, glass supports, and 3D glass cover plates for a major client’s foldable device project this year, with sources saying the client is Apple.

In addition, the report notes that A-share companies including Foxconn Industrial Internet (FII), Luxshare, BYD, global PCB leader Avary Holding, and acoustic components supplier Goertek are part of Apple’s broader supply chain and could stand to benefit from the foldable iPhone launch.
