[News] STMicroelectronics Launches Locally Made STM32 MCUs in China via Huahong Partnership
STMicroelectronics has taken a major step to meet China’s growing chip demand. Reuters, citing a company press release, reports that the European chipmaker began shipping STM32 wafers to Chinese customers through a partnership with local foundry giant Huahong.
According to STMicroelectronics, the first batch of microcontrollers has been fully manufactured in China, with new STM32 product lines slated for local mass production later this year.
Notably, ijiwei points out that local production of STM32 MCUs will begin with the high-performance STM32H7 series, followed by the performance- and security-focused STM32H5 series and the new entry-level STM32C5 series.
Through this collaboration, STMicroelectronics becomes the first global semiconductor company with a dual supply chain, the report adds. According to STMicroelectronics, this manufacturing model offers Chinese customers a dual-sourcing option—allowing them to choose between locally produced and overseas-manufactured MCUs—while ensuring consistent quality and compatibility across global supply.
In front-end wafer production, ST has deepened its 15-year collaboration with Huahong, using the same 40 nm embedded non-volatile memory (eNVM) technology and quality standards as its global fabs to ensure China-made chips meet ST’s worldwide benchmarks. Meanwhile, packaging and testing are carried out at ST’s Shenzhen fab and by local OSAT partners, completing a fully localized, high-quality supply chain.
The partnership traces back to 2024, when STMicroelectronics announced it would transfer its 40nm embedded non-volatile memory (eNVM) CMOS logic process to Huahong Semiconductor under a “China-for-China” strategy. As reported by EE News Analog, the move will see 40nm STM32 microcontrollers manufactured at Huahong’s 300mm wafer fab in Wuxi.
According to TrendForce, as of 4Q25, Hua Hong ranked as the world’s sixth-largest foundry by revenue with a 2.5% global share, while SMIC held third place with a 5.2% share.
