Qualcomm, the leading manufacturer of telecommunications chips and mobile processors, announced its decision to terminate the $47 billion purchase agreement to acquire NXP, a Dutch company known for automotive and IoT chips, after China’s Ministry of Commerce failed to approve the deal. Qualcomm’s business has been influenced by the slowing smartphone sales recently, and would face more risks brought by the saturated market in the future, says TrendForce.
According to the latest report by WitsView, a division of TrendForce, global TV panel shipments reached 136.89 million pieces in 1H18, a year-on-year growth of 11%. The record high shipments have ended the decline over the past two years. After a high price level in 1H17, the TV panel prices have been decreasing since 1Q18, which pushed brands’ panel purchases. Panel makers also offered special deal projects to increase the shipments, which further lowered the panel prices.
Cloud computing platforms have fueled the digital transformation of enterprises in recent years. Public cloud has been playing a key role during the process. While applications of IoT and AI grow increasingly popular, the ecosystem of cloud services and the integration of cloud and edge have emerged as weak points of the market, says TrendForce. Cloud service providers have started to put more emphasis on the edge computing market, which has a CAGR of more than 30% from 2018 to 2022.
According to the latest research by TrendForce, the market of automotive mmWave radar expects rapid growth with the shipment estimated at 65 million units in 2018; the CAGR is expected to be 15% from 2018 to 2023. The growth momentum comes from China’s adoption of C-NCAP, a car safety assessment program, and NHTSA’s new regulation that makes automatic emergency braking system as a standard feature for new cars.
According to the latest research by TrendForce, the global VR market sees marginal growth this year, and will remain inactive till the year-end due to the conservative attitude of most manufacturers and lack of new products. TrendForce expects major manufacturers to schedule their new product launching at the end of the year to leverage the market in 2019. As for the rest of this year, the competition between Oculus and HTC in the Chinese market would be a focus for global VR market.
