After being steady for two consecutive months, prices of LED light bulbs began to drop noticeably in China during October, according to LEDinside, a division of TrendForce Branded light bulb vendors operating in the Chinese market begin promotional pricing much earlier before Singles’ Day on November 11
“Compared with the prior month, 40- and 60-watt equivalent LED light bulbs both saw a decline of 06% in their global average selling prices in October,” said LEDinside Allen Yu “The 40-watt equivalent LED light bulbs arrived at US$92, while the 60-watt came to US$126”
Package prices in China and chip prices have generally stayed constant
The recovery of LED market demand in September led to the stabilization of LED chip prices Some chips even saw their prices went up due to supply shortage This trend continued in October and has also kept package prices steady in China On the whole, prices of 2835 and 5630 LEDs in the Chinese market have been relatively constant during these few months
EMC 3030 LEDs are the exception to the trend as their prices have been on a slide International suppliers lowered prices of EMC 3030 LEDs in October, causing a monthly drop of 09% on average “International suppliers are gradually cutting prices for EMC 3030 LEDs in response to more Chinese competitors entering this market,” noted Yu

Prices of LED light bulbs were steady through September as the global LED market picked up significantly and LED chip prices remained stable, according to the latest report by LEDinside, a division of TrendForce
"The global average sales price (ASP) of 40-watt equivalent LED light bulbs fell 13% in September compared with the prior month to US$93, while the global ASP of 60-watt equivalent LED light bulbs dropped 09% monthly to US$127,” said LEDinside analyst Allen Yu
Stabilization of the chip market gave support to package prices in September
In the Chinese package market, there was no significant change to the ASP of 2835 LEDs as these products already experienced a massive price decline during 2015 and are now priced near their costs Moreover, LED chip manufacturers have raised prices on chips for standard packages This in turn also helped stabilize prices of 2835 LEDs in September Likewise, prices of 5630 LEDs were generally steady in the same month As for EMC 3030 LEDs, some South Korean suppliers lowered their prices, resulting a monthly decline of around 09%

The latest report from LEDinside, a division of TrendForce, finds that LED chip suppliers raised their prices in August, slowing down the price decline for end products Thus, prices of LED light bulbs will be on a stable trend in the short term
“Compared with July, the global average sales price (ASP) of 40-watt equivalent LED light bulbs fell just 04% in August to US$94,” said LEDinside analyst Allen Yu “The global ASP of 60-watt equivalent LED light bulbs also dropped 03% to US$128”
Increase in LED chip prices propped up package prices
In China’s LED package market, prices of 2835 LEDs halted their slide in August As prices of LED chips for standard packages were the first to go up, price increase is expected for standard and mid-power 2835 LEDs in the short term Conversely, prices of mid-power 5630 LEDs fell in August because some international suppliers, including those based in the US and South Korea, lowered their prices for these products As for EMC 3030 LEDs, their prices on a steady slide in August on account of oversupply and increasing market competition
“The price increase in standard LED chips during August will have a stabilizing effect on prices of chips used in other packages in the short term,” said Yu “Hence, most package prices in China are going to remain constant even as package suppliers have lowered prices for a few products”
LED light bulb prices stayed constant in August corresponding to the situation in upstream
In August, the ASP of 40-watt LED light bulbs fell 2% monthly in the UK, representing the largest drop in the world market Prices of some products in the UK showed steeper declines due to promotional activities For instance, prices of 8-watt 470-lumen LED light bulbs from Philips Lighting fell by 162% on average in August versus the prior month In Germany, the ASP of 40-watt equivalent LED light bulbs fell 11% monthly as just a few products saw modest price decline
In China, the ASP fell 08% monthly because hardly any vendors cut prices to promote their products during August Foshan Lighting lowered the price of its 7-watt 500-lumen light bulbs to US$281, down 12% from July ASPs of 40-watt equivalent LED light bulbs in other regional markets remained steady in August
Likewise, prices of 60-watt equivalent LED light bulbs in August were about the same as in July The US and the UK saw slightly larger monthly declines at 24% and 22%, respectively In the US, products that were on promotion include GE Lighting’s 11-watt 800-lumen LED light bulb, which fell 16% from July to US$653 As for the UK, promoted products include Philips Lighting’s 95-watt 806-lumen LED light bulb, which arrived at US$888, down 23% monthly Other regional markets were showing stable prices

LEDinside, a division of TrendForce, reports the global average sales prices of 40-watt and 60-watt equivalent LED light bulbs in July fell 07% and 06% versus the prior month, respectively, to US$95 and US$129
“July was the start of the traditional off season for the LED industry,” said LEDinside analyst Allen Yu “Furthermore, the economic conditions in Europe and the US remained weak, so the demand rebound that occurred in the lighting market was limited to just the second quarter Retail prices of LED light bulbs slid entering the third quarter, and some products suffered larger price drops on account of promotional activities”
Prices of LED packages in China are close to product costs; demand for high-power 3030 LEDs gradually picks up
In China, prices of 2835 LEDs and high-power 3030 LEDs were generally stable through July, while international suppliers lowered prices on mid-power 5630 LEDs “By package type, 2835 LEDs are currently the most in demand in the lighting market, and their prices have been falling since they became the market mainstream in 2013,” said Yu “At this point, prices of 2835 LEDs are near product costs, so the decline is also starting to moderate” On another note, high-power 3030 LEDs are seeing rising demand in the outdoor lighting market and can potentially become standard products similar to 2835 LEDs Hence, LEDinside expects the number of suppliers for high-power 3030 LEDs to increase, ratcheting up competition and driving down prices

Lighting LEDs accounted for US$39 billion of the US$88 billion Chinese LED package industry in 2015, according to the 2016 Chinese LED Chip and Package Industry Market Report by LEDinside, a division of TrendForce Lighting LEDs’ share in the total scale of the Chinese LED package industry in 2015 also grew 15% year on year to reach 44% MLS and Honglitronic, the two major Chinese package suppliers, have steadily expanded their market shares in the LED lighting application due to booming demand in Southeast Asia, India and other emerging markets Consequently, their standings in the industry have gradually risen as well
“Chinese lighting LED manufacturers are catching up with their international competitors in terms of technology and have become more competitive as a result,” said LEDinside analyst Allen Yu “Due to their cost advantages, the Chinese package suppliers have quickly made inroads into Southeast Asia, Africa and the emerging markets Some are also receiving orders from the larger international LED manufacturers In sum, increasing competitiveness and overseas expansion have continuously contributed to the revenue growth of the Chinese LED package industry in the recent period
Lightning Opto’s lighting LED revenue grew over 40% annually in 2015 to become the third-largest Chinese supplier of the product
MLS retained its top spot in the revenue ranking of Chinese lighting LED suppliers for 2015, registering only a slight year-on-year decline “MLS continues to expand its capacity and build channels to widen its lead over other suppliers, so its position in the ranking remains very secure in the short term,” noted Yu
Honglitronic’s boosted its position in the package market with the acquisition of Smalite and climbed to second place in the domestic lighting LED revenue ranking for 2015 As the parent company, Honglitronic has ramped up product development for lighting LEDs and added several products to the lineup, including flip-chip LED and COB LED The subsidiary Smalite on the other hand focuses on its EMC LED business and capacity expansion Honglitronic will also rely on its other acquisition, the lead frame supplier Lianyou, to further lower the cost of package production On the whole, Honglitronic’s competitiveness is expected to improve significantly in the near future
Lightning Opto is more advanced in its EMC LED technology compared with its domestic competitors and therefore has captured orders from many international LED suppliers Despite the market headwinds, Lightning Opto in 2015 posted an annual revenue growth of over 40% for its lighting LED business and captured the third spot in the ranking
