Global Mobile DRAM Sales Hit a New High in Previous Quarter, but Momentum Would Slacken in 2H18

20 August 2018

Driven by the release of new flagship Android models in the first half, the demands for smartphones in Q2 were higher than in Q1, expanding production volume by nearly 3% sequentially, according to DRAMeXchange, a division of TrendForce. This year, 6 GB memory has become a mainstream density for the high-end smartphone market, with the share of 8 GB becoming ever higher than in 2017. As supply remained tight, the second quarter’s contract prices still scored a slight sequential increase. Benefitting from their demand increase and price hikes, the Q2 sales for mobile DRAM grew 5.1% sequentially to US$8.869 billion, a record high.

DRAM Products to See a Weak Price Trend in 4Q18 after Price Growth of Nine Consecutive Quarters

16 August 2018

DRAMeXchange, a division of TrendForce, reports that DRAM suppliers have in turn begun their 4Q18 contract negotiations with their clients since the mid-August. Looking ahead, DRAMeXchange expects that the quotations of DRAM products have an increasing chance to grow weak in 4Q18, although the industries previously expected a flat price trend. This weak quotation is mainly due to increasing supply yet fairly limited growth in demand.

Apple to Announce New iPhones This Fall with a Budget Version Due to Cost Reduction of Components, Says TrendForce

14 August 2018

According to TrendForce, the sales of Apple’s iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X that were released in 2017 were lower than expected for models that celebrate 10th anniversary of the iPhone line. Sales of the iPhone 8/X series were affected by the delayed launch. Moreover, the demand for iPhone X has not been as strong as anticipated because consumers still need time to adjust to the high prices. While the market performance of the iPhone 8/X series has fallen short of the high expectations, iPhone sales as a whole are sustained by the popularity of models from the earlier generations. TrendForce finds that total iPhone sales for the whole year of 2017 reached around 216 million units, roughly the same as the annual figure for 2016.

TV Shipments in 2Q18 Were Lower Than Expected Due to High Inventory Level of Channel Distributors; Surging Panel Prices May Bring Risks in 2H18, Says TrendForce

1 August 2018

Global shipments of LCD TV sets totaled 47.75 million units for the second quarter of 2018, according to WitsView, a division of TrendForce. This shipment figure represents a quarterly decrease of 3.8%, as a result of the high inventory level of channel distributors. For the rest of this year, the surging panel prices will bring more uncertainties in 2H18. Considering the lower-than-expected shipments in 2Q18, WitsView expects the shipments for the whole year to increase by 2.3% YoY to 215.7 million units, lower than the previous forecast of 219 million.
