Process Control Paradigm Shift: AI Drives Structural Growth in Demand for Metrology and Inspection

AI and advanced nodes are driving a paradigm shift in process control. Although GAA, HBM, and advanced packaging follow different paths, all share one logic: testing costs far less than failure. This extends metrology and inspection demand from front-end to back-end. Process control has become a yield gatekeeper. The shift is structural, but equipment vendors are still early in scaling.
Key Highlights
- Core Logic: Driven by the AI boom and the migration to advanced nodes, chip values have skyrocketed. The industry has widely adopted the consensus that "the cost of testing is lower than the cost of failure," triggering a massive surge in demand for metrology and inspection.
- GAA: Complex 3D structures are buried under the subsequent layers, making post-fabrication measurement nearly impossible. This necessitates real-time, in-line inspection during active processing.
- HBM: Any defect post-bonding renders the entire high-value stack worthless. Consequently, every DRAM die must be rigorously verified as a Known Good Die (KGD) prior to stacking.
- Advanced Packaging: Heterogeneous integration of multi-vendor components creates an irreversible assembly where a single defect scraps the entire package. This dynamic has spawned entirely new inspection categories, compelling OSATs to ramp up capex for equipment upgrades aggressively.
- Front-End Fabs: Metrology has evolved from a supplementary function to a mission-critical checkpoint. Fabs are implementing rigorous in-line and off-line monitoring and significantly tightening Statistical Process Control (SPC) parameters.
- Supply Chain: Tier-1 leaders like KLA, Advantest, and Teradyne are capturing robust revenue growth, while tier-two suppliers are capitalizing on significant order spillover.
- Outlook: This represents a structural paradigm shift. However, with equipment manufacturers still in the early stages of capacity expansion, supply will remain tightly constrained and lag demand in the near term.
