TrendForce: LED Lighting-Use Market Contracted Up to 16% in Fourth Quarter

2014/11/18

LED

The lighting-use LED market contracted 5-16% in the fourth quarter, while backlighting-use LED products fell 4-13% according to a new report from LEDinside, a division of the Taiwan-based market intelligence firm TrendForce The average price of lighting-use LED products is falling with the arrival of the non-peak season and as competition intensifies among manufacturers, said Jack Kuo, an assistant research manager at LEDinside “Orders are falling and profits are being squeezed,” he said “For manufacturers to increase their market share, they need to introduce more new products”  Prices declined across the board in the lighting-use LED market in the fourth quarter due to increasing lighting product inventory As demand in the 3030 market gradually fell, it increased the speed of price declines and overall the market contracted 16% 5630 prices also fell, but only by 5% High power LED products did not fall notably in price for the most part, but the 1500mA was an exception, decreasing 6% Moreover, prices of backlight-use LED products used in mobile phones and tablets dropped by 13% LED specs for smartphones, tablets and PC are very similar, and can actually be shared in these applications, Kuo said 06t LED prices fell $ 0035 Furthermore, LED price for monitor application was fairly stable, decreasing just 2% LEDinside predicts LED specs for TV applications will be further standardized in 2015 7020 LED, representing LED specs in the edge-type LED TV sector, fell 6% to $ 0113 in the fourth quarter Meanwhile, the direct-type LED TV penetration rate is expected to reach 60% in 2015 3528/3030 LED package prices fell 10% in the fourth quarter  The lack of MOCVD experts in China to operate MOCVD equipment is no longer an issue, since the Chinese have been able to continue producing LEDs with high utilization rates, Kuo said, adding: “Even if the machines’ production yield is not optimized, Chinese manufacturers have still achieved economies of scale because of their high production volume and low manufacturing costs, which is putting enormous pressure on Taiwanese, Japanese and Korean LED manufacturers”  Looking ahead to 2015, LED manufacturers will face a number of challenges, Kuo said They will need to figure out to maintain their competiveness in a saturated market, where low prices are common Additionally, there are 5 LED manufacturers in the industry that have most of the patents: Nichia, Cree, Toyoda Gosei, Philips and Osram It will be imperative for other vendors to form strategic alliances with them to avoid patent lawsuits and expand into new markets

In the third quarter, when LED market activity typically slows, LED backlighting prices declined an average of 3-8% as demand fell Meanwhile, LED demand for lighting applications remained flat, but price competition in the overall LED market, remained fierce, as prices fell 6-12%, according to LEDinside, a subsidiary of the Taiwan-based market intelligence firm TrendForce  Backlight-use LED inventories were high in the third quarter, as order visibility was only 1-2 months, wrote Jack Kuo, an assistant research manager at LEDinside, in a research note As the global mobile device market matures, demand for smartphones is falling, causing mobile phone backlight-use LED prices to fall 5%, Kuo added  In addition, because of the traditional slow season and the World Cup coming to an end, the TV backlight-use LED market is cooling Global TV panel shipments will fall 6-8% This will affect Chinese brands’ procurements As the LED TV backlighting market undergoes a seasonal adjustment, the average price of 3528 LED used in direct-type LED TV fell 8% to US$024 while the average price of 7020 2-in-1 LED used in edge-type LED TV dropped 8% to US$012  In the lighting-use LED market, fierce price-cutting by Korean manufacturers decimated profits, as mid-power LED products such as the 5630 were sold at close to their manufacturing costs In that sub-sector, there is very limited space to slash prices further By contrast, in the high-power LED market, there is considerable room for prices to fluctuate LED prices at high-current 800mA fell most sharply, up to 12%  In the Chip-On-Board (COB) sub-sector, Cree, Citizen, Bridgelux and other manufacturers are all introducing small-size, high luminous efficacy, high-density (HD) products, to which the market has responded enthusiastically Some of those products are equipped with special features, such as smart wireless controls “As the functions of LED products are upgraded, customer orders will gradually shift toward high-efficiency products,” Jack Kuo said

LED price for lighting applications have dropped around 3-7 percent in 2Q14 Similarly, backlight-use LED prices have also seen a decline, dipping around 5-10 percent, with direct-type TV backlight-use LEDs decreasing by 13 percent due to fierce market competition, according to the recent price report from LEDinside, the green energy research division of TrendForce Prices of high-power and mid-power lighting-use LEDs continue to show a slight decline this quarter For mid-power 5630, Korean manufacturers represented by Samsung are still adopting price strategy to seize market share High-power LED price drops were more dramatic, especially in prices for products with higher brightness (120-140lm), which had a drop rate of 7 percent this quarter Product line extensions and performance improvements remain the major focus of manufacturers in terms of COB products At present, lighting manufacturers will only place orders once LED manufacturers have completed under-30W product lines Backlight order visibility on average has reached 1-2 months, said Jack Kuo, Assistant Research Manager of LEDinside LED chip and package manufacturers continue to increase utilization rates Even though LED manufacturers have maintained high utilizations rates, price drops of 10-15 percent each year have impacted revenue and profit Although booking orders of 3Q14 can be seen, manufacturers have a conservative outlook on expanding production capacity in response to the order demands  LED manufacturers are hence turning their attention towards developing niche markets and high value-added LED products this year and gradually reduce backlight-use LED product proportion, said Kuo The niche LED markets that will garner manufacturers’ attention include automotive lighting, flash LED, and UV LED In terms of high value-added LED products, focus will be on high color gamut backlight-use LED and high CRI lighting-use LED With the Brazil World Cup right around the corner in June, market demand for large-sized and 4K high resolution TV has increased
